Dos and Don'ts of Smokeless Fire
As much as a fire can elevate an evening gathering and create a space of comfort and relaxation, it can quickly turn to the opposite. An evening of constantly moving around the fire to avoid the painful smoke in your eyes and smell on your clothes is less than ideal.
Thankfully, this remains a distant memory as Breeo smokeless fire pits have solved that issue. However, even with a smokeless fire pit that works like a charm, there are standard practices to follow when building and maintaining your fire to maximize your fire pit and make a beautiful flame.
Here is a short dos and don'ts list that you can read in a jiffy to build the desired fire for your backyard gatherings. Want a more in depth understanding? Check out the ultimate fire guide on how to build a fire, which includes tons of information and a video to follow. Master Guide.
TIMING
DO
-
Start your fire twenty minutes before guests arrive. It takes a little bit to get a roaring fire, spend adequate time getting it started beforehand so you're prepared for the party.
DON'T
- Begin to build your fire when it's chilly outside and you're rushing to gather supplies. You can’t speed up the process of building a roaring, smokeless fire.
CHOOSING YOUR FUEL
DO
- Gather your three types of fuel: firestarter, kindling, cord wood.
- Use high quality, very dry materials.
- Split all kindling and cord wood (hardwood no more than 4 in. diameter). Use a natural fire starter like tumbleweeds, shredded newspaper, or cardboard.
DON'T
- Use damp wood or pieces larger than 4 inches in diameter.
- Crumple newspaper into a ball for a firestarter.
- Use lighter fluids, liquid accelerants, or any petroleum-based starter
SPLIT YOUR WOOD
DO
- Chop your cord wood in pieces no larger than 4 inches in diameter.
- Split the kindling into small pieces - between ½ to 1 inch in diameter.
DON'T
- Use large chunks of wood for fuel.

STARTING YOUR FIRE
DO
- Build a log cabin with your cord wood and kindling to create maximum airflow throughout the fire pit.
- Use a grill lighter or long match to light your fire.
DON’T
- Throw chunks of wood and newspaper into the fire pit, light it, and hope it catches.
- Build a teepee (we recommend the log cabin method to ensure maximum airflow, which keeps it smokeless).
- Use a synthetic starter if you’re going to cook over the fire
MAINTAINING YOUR FIRE
DO
- Add wood gradually. 1-2 pieces at a time.
- Pay attention to the fire and add wood when needed.
DON'T
- Let the fire burn down to coals and toss logs into the fire (this will make the fire produce smoke while it tries to start up).
- Add more than 2 pieces of wood at one time.
PUTTING OUT YOUR FIRE
DO
- Let the fire burn down to ashes.
- Cover with a spark screen if you have to leave it unattended.
- Remove ash after it cools down with the Breeo Ash Shovel.
DON’T
- Dump water on the fire to put it out (this will make your patio messy and will clog the X Airflow™ System).
- Leave your open fire unattended.
